25 years ago, a mine blowout on Muddy Creek devastated the life fighting to live in the Cheat River main steam, overwhelming the river with the polluted water known as acid-mine-drainage. For the first time in a quarter century, the pH of Muddy Creek is neutral. Next year, the ICF World Cup, which hasn’t been held in the U.S. since 2003, will host their four-race World Cup Series on the Cheat River.

     Wow.

Over the past quarter century, FOC has been instrumental in the restoration of water quality to the Cheat River main stem, resulting in healthy fish populations from headwaters to Cheat Lake.  Downstream of Muddy Creek, the Cheat River Canyon is now public land and the Allegheny Trail has been re-opened.

Cheat Fest is the same age as Friends of the Cheat. It was born as part celebration and part fundraiser to empower the community  to take action to restore and protect the Cheat. Today, it is still the primary annual fundraiser that supports the work of FOC – to restore, preserve and promote the watershed home to many of us.

We are still looking for support for this year’s Down River Race and Festival. Help comes in many forms – from attending, to volunteering during the festival, to donating financial support to help cover our costs. Learn more about becoming a sponsor below, or check out our website for other opportunities to become more engaged!

We are so grateful for the hundreds of folks who come together to make it all happen!

  • Big News for the Cheat Canyon Down River Race

    By Chris Norbury

The Cheat Canyon Downriver race this year will be an International Canoe Federation Ranking race.  There are only 9 ICF ranking races in the world in 2019, in addition to 4 World Cup races and a World Championships. The designation as an ICF ranking race allows individuals to enter, without the need to be selected by their respective nations, and so is the highest level of competition at which an individual can enter yourself without qualifying. The race on the Cheat Canyon will be one of two in the US, with the other being a sprint on the Nantahala river held as part of the US Open competition in March.

These two races are the first senior level International downriver ranking races in the US since the early 2000’s, but they are not the last!  Next year, the World Championships and World Cup competitions are coming to the Appalachian Mountains.  The World Championships will be held in late April on the Nantahala River, followed a week later by the four race World Cup series on the Cheat River, with two races on the Narrows, and two on the Canyon. The World Cup has not been held in the US since 2003, and not outside of Europe since an event in Tasmania, Australia, in 2009.  It has been much longer since the Wildwater World Championships have been held outside of Europe, with the previous event being just down the road on the Savage river as far back as 1989. It is hoped that the 2019 ICF ranking races will raise awareness about the 2020 events. The Nantahala ICF ranking race attracted competitors from as far away as Australia and South Africa, and domestically from San Diego although the proximity to the European Championships likely precludes many competitors making the trip from the powerhouse wildwater nations in Europe this year.

What does this mean for your entry in the Cheat River Downriver race?  There will be ICF judges on site to ensure that everyone follows ICF rules, but recent changes to those rules mean that there will be very few, if any, people impacted by the need to adhere to ICF rules. All competitors are free to race as normal, with the Cheat Canyon Downriver race results to be compiled as in past years. To be included in the ICF ranking from the downriver race you need to be competing in K1M, K1W, C1W, C1M, C2M or C2W classes, but you can race in other classes (K2, etc) to be included in the normal Cheat Canyon results.  These are the only classes for the ICF race, so K1W competitors in 9ft boats will race those K1W in wildwater boats. The characteristic mass start for the Canyon race will remain the same, with the only limitations being on classes, and on boat length.  If your boat is longer than 14’9″ for a kayak, 14’1″ for a C1 and 16’4″ for a C2 then it can also race, but will not be included in the ICF rankings.  We already know of some current and past US team paddlers who are coming up from the South East for the race, so please join this spring and look forward to racing of the highest caliber on the Cheat River in 2020.

Over the past 25 years, this work has included restoration of waters polluted by acid-mine-drainage from abandoned coal mines, as well as river and trail access projects, and citizen scientist initiatives.

  • A Quarter Century of Cheat Fests

    by Amanda Pitzer

    Cheat-Fest-2018-WV-by-Gabe-DeWitt-4-LKG EDit

A quarter century of Cheat Fests. Now that’s something. We’ve done something. What is that “something”? What has the Cheat River Festival’s impact been on Friends of the Cheat? The Cheat River? The community? Me?

Those are some big questions. Especially for someone like me who has been embedded in the weeds of the festival. I wasn’t there the first year. That must have been scary! My first Cheat Fest was 2006. I volunteered in years following, but missed 2009 – the elusive “Year it Didn’t Rain”. I’ve been Executive Director for 8 Cheat Fests – 2019 will be my ninth. I’ve pretty much seen it all:  from dancing blisters to broken arms, from first-time volunteers to the volunteer who tells me the “way it’s always been”, from baby’s first Cheat Fest to introductions of future couples, from rainbows to microbursts and every kind of weather inbetween. I can bear witness to the impacts a little festival has had – those measureable and those immeasurable.

You might notice that my “been there, done that” list is pretty much all about people. That’s because Cheat Fest, despite being named after our beloved river with proceeds going to FOC’s mission to protect that river, is all about PEOPLE. Cheat Fest truly is a uniquely special confluence of communities. Cheat Fest brings people to a festival that might otherwise have never gone to a “festival”. For some, a “festival” is an ideal space in time where a group of people exist together in harmony, celebrating the same values. (Sounds awesome, right!?) Those values can be as simple as good music or as noble as cleaning up a river. For others, a “festival” can conjure up negative feelings about the counterculture, excess, and waste. Any good organizer considers these issues and potential hypocrisies. 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of another festival, Woodstock. Woodstock was an event that changed a generation, and arguably the world: “Although the festival didn’t go exactly as planned, it was, as advertised, three days of peace and music. That made Woodstock an idyll, particularly in retrospect, even though it was declared a state disaster area at the time.” (Jon Pareles, NYT) Now, I’m not saying Cheat Fest has been as impactful as Woodstock but, a great festival has a reputation truly greater than itself, and I believe we have achieved that with Cheat Fest.

So, what else have we achieved? Well, we have raised a heck of a lot of money for FOC’s work to restore, preserve, and promote the outstanding natural qualities of the Cheat River watershed. From 2012 through today, Cheat Fest has a Net Profit of $202,100. These funds infuse FOC’s annual budget with what we non-profit nerds call Unrestricted Revenue. Unrestricted Revenue is the best kind of revenue because the organization can use it for our greatest need, which, year in and year out is funding for FOC staff salaries. In regular person speak – this money pays us to do stuff! FOC has become a great place to work, and Cheat Fest dollars support competitive salaries and benefits so we can attract and retain talented and committed staff members. FOC has been instrumental in the restoration of water quality to the Cheat River main stem, resulting in healthy fish populations from headwaters to Cheat Lake. Beyond the main stem, for the first time in 25 years, the pH of Muddy Creek is neutral. Downstream of Muddy Creek, the Cheat River Canyon is now public land and the Allegheny Trail has been re-opened. FOC negotiated the purchase of the future Cheat River Rail-Trail, and in December 2018 was awarded over $3 million dollars to build the trail and implement Trail Town initiatives across Preston County. We have stayed true to our whitewater roots, maintaining accesses and county roads, and expanded paddling opportunities for all through the Cheat River Water Trail. And, that’s just the short list!

The accomplishments listed above are tangible, but there is so much more that can’t be listed in a grant report. Cheat Fest has introduced people to a special place. Cheat Fest has created a space for memory-making. Cheat Fest has taught people about stewardship. Cheat Fest has inspired others to take on otherwise daunting tasks. The ripple effect of Cheat Fest goes on and on. As leader of the FOC team, Cheat Fest fills my cup with joy, inspiration, and hope. Cheat Fest is YOU, so what I’m really saying is YOU fill my cup.

I think I’m going to need a bigger cup for year 25. CHEERS!

  • Seeking 2019 Festival Sponsoring Parnters

Did you know that Cheat Fest is the primary annual fundraiser that supports the work of the environmental non-profit group Friends of the Cheat (FOC)? FOC has worked to restore, protect and promote the health of the Cheat River Watershed for over two decades. From monitoring water quality and remediating the polluted run-off from abandoned coal mines to supporting river access and offering environmental education, their work has broadly and deeply impacted the surrounding community and habitat.

Cheat Fest serves to both celebrate this work, and to provide financial support and stability to an organization loved by its community. Sponsoring partners help assure a successful festival experience for FOC and for the community of river lovers who come out every year.
